Hairstyle Thursday!

Meet Megan of Hair Raising Adventures who was inspired by this style.
She is my Hairstyle Thurday guest today.

Please, Introduce your daughter and yourself.
My name is Megan (aka Mama M) and my daughter JJ is 4 years old.

What is her hair regimen?  What products do you use?
I wash JJ’s hair with a sulfate-free shampoo every 2-4 weeks. Currently we are using Dessert Essence’s Tea Tree shampoo. In between shampoos I co-wash (with conditioner) every 5-10 days, depending on how her hair is styled. At the moment, we are rotating between Live Clean Bali Oil conditioner and Live Clean Moisturizing Conditioner. I will often add some avocado or jojoba oil to the conditioner and let it sit while JJ plays in the tub. For styling I usually use a homemade mix of shea butter, shea oil, coconut oil, vegetable glycerin and avocado oil.
Are there some products that have worked better than others?

I find that products with sulfates and mineral oils truly do dry out JJ’s hair. Her hair really craves moisture. I am an avid ingredient-reader. Avocado oil and vegetable glycerin seem to be magic ingredients for her. Because I live in Canada, I am not able to find some of the popular products that I read about on natural hair blogs. Other products I am able to find, but the prices are craaazy! For example, her hair LOVES Kinky-Curly Knot today, but I paid $31.11 (plus tax) for an 8 oz bottle!!!  Because of this, I have been experimenting with making my own products.
Tell us about her journey?
JJ has been “natural” since day 1. She was born with soft, straight hair but it didn’t take long to evolve into what people have called 4B and 4C-type hair. I love her ‘fro but as her hair grew longer I realized that wearing her hair “out” all the time was not going to be a viable option…. I realized I would need to learn how to style it.  So it’s really been “our” journey. When she was about 2 1/2 I discovered natural hair inspiration on the internet, and eventually started my own little blog where I’ve documented our journey.
What hairstyles does she prefer to wear? Which hairstyles do you prefer?
JJ loves her hair to look “neat” and “long” via box braids, cornrows and twists. She loves beads. She is not a fan of any style that she thinks is too “puffy”. I, on the other hand, love her big ‘fro, twist-outs, braid-outs, and hair that is as big as humanly possible. Sometimes, as you might guess, we disagree. I usually go with her preference for braids and twists because I can keep these in for 1-2 weeks easily, which works for my own crazy home/work schedule.
Can you share a few of her favorite and your favorite hair styles? Why are they fav’s?

Do you have a website or youtube channel?  If so, do share.
Yes! I wish I had more time for my blog. It is small – but growing! It started out as a place for me to keep track of great links and what has worked for us. I had no idea that over time I would connect with so many amazing, supportive and knowledgeable people – who are as obsessed with hair as I am! You can see more at:

  1. JJ is absolutely adorable! I really like the style with the green and gold beads, with the thread wrapped hair–very creative!
